Pinworm, Enterobius vermicularis, is a parasitic helminth that
is widely distributed throughout the population. Because only five
to ten percent of infected persons have demonstrable eggs in their
stools, specimens must be collected from the perianal region. It is
to this area that the gravid female migrates and lays large numbers
of eggs while the host is resting. Male worms are seen only upon
purgation or at times with diarrhea.

The HIV Ag/Ab Combo assay can simultaneously detect both HIV
antigen and antibodies. HIV antigen is a protein produced by the
virus immediately after infection, whereas antibodies are developed
days later as the body works to fight off the infection. Studies
have demonstrated that this test may detect HIV up to 20 days
earlier than antibody-only tests, which is important in controlling
the spread of the virus. This is particularly important because
individuals who receive false negative results remain unaware that
they have HIV and are not able to take proper precautions.

Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common reportable sexually
transmitted infection in the US and worldwide. It is a
gram-negative obligate intracellular parasite. Greater than
50% of infected patients are asymptomatic so screening is
important. Please check with your patient's insurance company
for screening frequency coverage.
C. trachomatis detection is mainly performed by two tests:
nucleic acid amplified testing (NAAT) and cell culture.

The Third Report of the National Cholesterol Education
Program (NCEP) on Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood
Cholesterol in Adults (ATP III) has recommended the monitoring of a
calculated lipid called non-HDL cholesterol (total cholesterol
minus HDL cholesterol). Non-HDL cholesterol represents the
sum of VLDL and LDL cholesterol. This value is most useful in
patients with triglyceride values > 200 mg/dl. In these
patients, non-HDL cholesterol better represents the atherogenic
lipoproteins than does LDL alone. Thus, in these patients, non-HDL
cholesterol has been recommended as a secondary target of
therapy. Treatment goals for non-HDL cholesterol have been
set at 30 mg/dl higher than LDL cholesterol goals.
